De-constructing Rain or Shine to his undoing

Yeng Guiao keeps the men he knows he can use... awesomely.

Yeng Guiao will get the players that he wants.

Don’t think for one sec that the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters were at the bitter part of this trade. Sure, breaking up their “Fire and Ice” combo makes their team less marketable and sending their top big guy away is another blow for the squad, but I believe Yeng Guiao can make wonders with his new roster.

As of this moment, this is how the transactions would look like:

AIR21: Jay-R Reyes and Reed Juntilla

MERALCO: Sol Mercado, Erick Rodriguez, and Paolo Bugia

RAIN OR SHINE: Ronjay Buenafe, Ronnie Matias, Beau Belga, and two future draft picks (Air21’s first round picks for 2011 & 2013).

It was only a matter of time before Sol Mercado joined a Pangilinan franchise...
to think they only gave up Beau Belga and Reed Juntilla.

If Chito Salud wants to regulate the trade, he can just give one of those draft picks to Air21.

And yeah, looking at this scenario, the Elasto Painters will have the advantage.

Using the stats I’ve kept for myself (I started to “stat keep” during the 2007-08 season), here are the numbers that I crunched from the previous seven conferences!

REMARKS: Air21 will love Reyes but with Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Nonoy Baclao, and the Air21 import, finding a spot for him could mess up their rotation. Reyes for years was the Rain or Shine’s most over big guy but I can’t see why he has yet to get Dennis Espino-like numbers at this point of his career. Maybe he has reached his potential? I dunno but it’s either he’ll get bench over Baclao or Baclao will be benched over him.

REMARKS: Here’s a funny thought – Air21 took a player Yeng Guiao despises after the coach left their camp. Irony? Bet your ass it is! But it’s not as if Juntilla can’t do well in these situations. When he likes the system, he goes all out. I think he’ll flourish under Bong Ramos’ system. With Rey Guevarra, Wesley Gonzales, and Patrick Cabahug at that SG spot, expect Juntilla to cease the opportunity to become the team’s next Gary David.

REMARKS: I remember when the ROS management lent Sol Mercado to Smart-Gilas. My initial reaction was that Mercado will eventually play for one of the Pangilinan franchises in the near future. So quick? Nah. With the way Sol and the ROS’ coaching staff feud, him wanting out is inevitable. His addition to the Bolts will give the squad more offensive weapons. How The Sol Train and Macmac Cardona coexist in the squad will be a mystery though.

REMARKS: I remember a couple of years back when Bugia thought of quitting basketball to use his Ateneo knowledge in starting a business. He should reconsider the thought. Jumping from team to team destroys a player’s credibility. He’s also seldom used and is always placed on the reserve list. Macky Escalona is doing well these days...

REMARKS: I could have sworn Yeng Guiao will do everything to re-acquire his services. This enforcer from Letran could see himself languishing in the bench. However, he could see playing time if Ryan Gregorio wants a guy with the same intensity a la Beau Belga. But with Gabby Espinas, Asi Taulava, Mark Isip, Hans Thiele, and Nelbert Omolon listed, that possibility is bleak.

REMARKS: Buenafe flourished under Yeng Guiao. The guy is an upgrade to past Air21 shooting guards like Renren Ritualo and Gary David because he can shoot, slash, and most importantly defend. Sending him to ROS makes it easy for the Painters to forget about Sol Mercado.

REMARKS: Belga is someone Yeng Guiao wants in his system. Actually it startled me why Coach Yeng would part with the big man at the start of the season. It seems as if Belga and Ryan Gregorio is a bad mix while Belga and Yeng is a great combo. The trade is great for Big Beau because he was moments away of joining Jondan Salvador and Richard Yee in the “could be great players but their confidence was destroyed” list.

REMARKS: Air21 looked for a way out on Ronnie’s case. Matias suffered an ACL tear that almost ended his career. Before that he was a superstar in the making. While I can see Matias doing wonders with the squad, I doubt if he’ll be a force this season. Hopefully he’ll heal well to help Rain or Shine in their quest to the top.

I could say more but I’m actually struggling to finish this piece because of non-recreational matters (WORK! WORK! WORK!).

Anyway, I still think Yeng Guiao won in this trade.

He made a team out of the rubble and he did it with his liking.

I wonder how Gabe Norwood would fit in?

Game over.
