SYDMAN’S 2010-11 PBA PHILIPPINE CUP POWER RANKINGS – START TO JANUARY 1, 2011

Harvey Carey is double-doubling his way
to the Best Player of the Conference plum.

What happened!

2011 HAPPENED!!!

The PBA promises to bring the best of Philippine basketball this 2011. Despite their coverage rights dilemma (which was brought upon by Solar TV’s “inability” to broadcast their games well), Chito Salud and the rest of the PBA faithful are optimistic that 2011 will be the year the PBA will again climb the ratings ladder.

Talks resumed with regards to the PBA Arena. As of the moment, the league held its games at Araneta Coliseum. When the Araneta Coliseum is not available, the Philsports Arena, Cuneta Astrodome, Ynares Center, and the San Juan Gym are amongst the “lifesavers”. I remember a few years back when the open lot in front of SM North EDSA would be the ideal venue of the PBA Arena. There lies Trinoma now on that area. I also remember a few years back when the open lot along EDSA and Quezon Avenue would be the ideal venue of the PBA Arena. There is a SM Hypermart now in that area. Hopefully this arena would happen.

With the PBL and the Liga Pilipinas fading to obscurity, the PBA has created their own version of the D-League. Maynilad, Hapee, and Toyota-Otis are among the teams that could join the league. This league aims to hone non-PBA players as well as a breeding ground for would-be PBA stars.

Inasmuch as I like the concept, I would rather have a European Football-like season where after three conferences of fighting the worst of the PBA would swap places with the best of the D-League. This will be determined with the team with most wins. Sure, “loaned players” from PBA squads as well as the money that the D-League squads would be a problem but this will eliminate the best teams playing with mediocre squads. Or maybe a team should a certain number of victories if the PBA is scared to lose a Team A squad. Why need a D-League when you have Barako Bull? Rain or Shine is also in the verge of having the same fate. Maybe PBA teams won’t want to see their teams getting the humiliating sack downwards so they need to actually play well.

Maybe it’s time for the PBA to evolve. Instead of one franchise, a particular group of franchises could hold one PBA team. At least a superstar tag of 350,00Php wouldn’t be that doom-laden for a particular company.

This is better than expansion but at the same time, it will create a lot of negative reactions.

Anyway, I rated the best players in the 2010 part of the 2010-11 Philippine Cup. Since at this point the BMEG/TNT and the SMB/GINEBRA series has yet to play a Game 2 match, this means players like Joe Devance, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Gary David, and Sonny Thoss can still see their names at the top of the batch. Devance could have been the runaway winner had the Alaska Aces defeated the Ginebra Kings but they didn’t so that Best Player of the Conference Award will up for grabs by Arwind Santos, Jay Washington, and Harvey Carey.

Anyway, I’m going to stop being predictable and merely rundown the Top PBA players according to my tabulations. The top players in this ranking are those who had a major impact on their team’s wins, individual stats, and game brilliance.

If I won’t use a particular system, then I’m merely putting who I want to win.

The Power Rankings is tabulated and never fabricated... although you can pay me... thru Paypal!

Just joking!

Anyway here are the Top 50 players. If you want to see the previous rank, then this is the link.

Jared Dillinger moved up 13 spots because of his inspired games against Rain or Shine and BMEG (Game 1) while Dennis Espino failed to give Gary David help even in their last game which prompted The Menace to slide 11 spots. Mark Isip should have had statistical downfall because of the ouster of Barako Bull but not only was he traded to Meralco, the Bolts used him well. In their last game against BMEG, Isip had 17 points! Ali Peek’s presence is slowly getting attacked by the entry of Ranidel de Ocampo. Willie Miller had his stats mowed down by the strong showing of Mark Caguioa and Ronald Tubid in their last two games. Roger Yap was brought down by injury but James Yap elevated his game by scoring 30+ against the Tropang Texters! Expect Carey, Santos, and Washington to inch and claw for the top spot but they need to reach the finals to grab this opportunity! For SMB though, Santos and J-Wash will basically go head-to-head with each other!

YOU MUST BE CONFUSED WITH THE PLUS AND THE MINUSES! Well, you need to check out the stats for next week because the only movers in the ranking should only be BMEG, GINEBRA, SMB, and TNT players!

Next week, with three more games added to their overall stats, I expect most of the “still fighting” superstars to improve their standing. Devance had a giant-sized lead over his next three competitors that he MIGHT stick around at the number one spot... until he is eventually displace before the Finals happen.

So until next week...

GAME OVER!
