SYDMAN’S 2010-11 PBA PHILIPPINE CUP POWER RANKINGS – FINAL (WITH PREDICTIONS)

Jay Washington is the odds-on favorite to win
the Best Player of the Conference Award

On paper, they are two of the league’s premier squads.

Fortunately for San Miguel and Talk N Text, real life is great for them as well.

Talk N Text ended their finals drought by dismantling B-MEG, 4 to 2 in their semi-final series. The Llamados’ offense failed to exist and they threw bricks when the third quarter surfaced. Jason Castro and Ali Peek played well to spark TNT’s bench while James Yap, Rico Maierhofer, Marc Pingris, and Peter June Simon struggled to give their team a finals seat.

Meanwhile, San Miguel was able resist Ronald Tubid’s third quarter surge in a match that could have gone either way. Tubid was the vital cog if the Gins’ wanted a win. He defended well against Arwind Santos and he was able to hit a couple of cold-blooded shots. When he rested, Arwind went berserk and JC Intal’s four fouls in the fourth quarter was part of the reason why the Kings went into early penalty.

That Game 6 match was hard fought and aside from Santos and Tubid, there were a lot of heroes for both squads. Jay Washington, Dondon Hontiveros, Paul Artadi, and Alex Cabagnot were helpful to SMB’s cause while Eric Menk, Mark Caguioa, Enrico Villanueva, and Rudy Hatfield provided the oomph for the Kings.

An airball that went to the hands of Jay Washington, Alex Cabagnot’s triple, Paul Artadi’s steal from Eric Menk, and Arwind Santos’ defensive rebound after Caguioa missed his free throw on purpose was enough to send the Kings to elimination.

Anyway, here is my last Power Rankings for the 2010-11 Philippine Cup.

THE RATINGS SYSTEM:

My list is certified tabulated and not fabricated. In order for my stats to not crunch numbers in decimal digits, here is the formula I used:

  1. GET THE AVERAGE OF (MPG/ (PPG x 1) + (RPG x 1.5) + (APG x 2) + (SPG x 2.5) + (BPG x 2.5). LET’S CALL THIS 3J.
  2. THEN SUBTRACT TURNOVERS PER GAME
  3. THEN WHEN YOU GET 3J, DO THIS EQUATION: PPG + RPG + APG + SPG + BPG. LET’S CALL THIS SUM “J3”.
  4. THEN FIND THE DIFFERENCE OF J3 AND 3J.
  5. WHEN YOU GET THE DIFFERENCE, MULTIPLY THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE GAMES PLAYED.

 It’s so EASY!!!

Let’s get this thing rolling!!!

GAME STARTS NOW!

TOTAL STAT POINTS: 705.02

THE DROPS:
To get to the finals, you need to play a bunch of games. Eliminated teams in the first round have 14 games while quarterfinalists could have a high as 17. Semi-finalists are only good for 21 to 24 games while a Game 7 Finals game could give San Miguel and Talk N Text 28 games max. This is why players with no semifinal action could see their names slipping.

However there are a bunch of players who failed to make impact in the semis. Kelly Williams, Jared Dillinger, Jondan Salvador, and Sunday Salvacion’s numbers are examples.

THE RISERS:
Even if Ronald Tubid’s Ginebra failed to win their semis series against San Miguel, The Fearless Saint had a spectacular playoff run. Add Mark Caguioa, Peter June Simon, Enrico Villanueva, Mike Cortez, Danny Ildefonso, Dorian Pena, and Danny Seigle on this list. Ali Peek rose to the list after a slew of big games in the semis. Jimmy Alapag and Harvey Carey had to drop because of Peek’s explosion.

Teammates fight for individual honor.

MY PICK FOR THE BEST PLAYER OF THE CONFERENCE:
Jay Washington is my odds-on choice for the Best Player of the Conference Award. He can be explosive but he can also quietly pile up the stats. San Miguel is in the finals and he is partly responsible for the feat. Arwind Santos can still have a chance to score the plum but it will take a string of bad games for J-Wash and a string of excellent games for Arwind to make this feat possible.

I doubt that will happen especially since with an average of 35 minutes, Washington should have enough time getting his usual numbers.

FINALS PREDICTION:
Jimmy Alapag will be pitted against Alex Cabagnot while Dondon Hontiveros will probably face either Jason Castro or Ryan Reyes. Kelly Williams should find himself in Arwind Santos’ face while battle of the bulge will take place and Ali Peek and Dorian Pena will be in its forefront. The main match would probably be Harvey Carey against Jay Washington. Carey is a defensive stopper while J-Wash needs to provide the firepower for San Miguel to convincingly win.

Chot Reyes seems to be the veteran in this coaching matchup but Ato Agustin is tried and tested on and off court during mano y mano situations.

I’m going to say San Miguel on this one because for some insane reason, I can see Danny Ildefonso, Danny Seigle, and Olsen Racela turning back time and doing damage.

PREDICTION: SAN MIGUEL

While I believe that the SMB-Ginebra series WAS the finals, I think TNT can make this pairing interesting. Hopefully the venues would be jam-packed and the TV ratings would soar.

While I doubt it...

It can happen!

GAME OVER!
