Wrestlemania 27 - The Results

The Sheamus-Daniel Bryan match was scratched. Both guys couldn’t even make the show but guys like The Great Khali, Zach Ryder, and Hornswoggle made the show.

It sucks right?

Yup.

Game starts now.

EDGE (C) VERSUS ALBERTO DEL RIO
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

I still think this should have been an Edge versus Christian match. I always thought the build up for this match didn’t suit my inkling. Anyway, contrary to what people think, this should have been the outcome. Alberto del Rio will hate himself for losing his “destiny” in Wrestlemania. As for Edge and Christian, this friendship will likely further the turmoil that will ignite the turn. I would have NOT made this match the opener because it ruined the spectacle of the World Championship as well as the integrity of the Rey-Cody match. Also, only in Wrestlemania will a Rolls Royce get battered.

CODY RHODES VERSUS REY MYSTERIO

This should have been the opening match because after the World title match, the crowd was almost dead for this one. If there’s any consolation, Cody Rhodes is owning right now with this character and I hope he’ll find a way to break the glass ceiling. For Rey Mysterio, his costume masks continue to prevail during Wrestlemania. I was hoping he’ll do Kung Fu Panda or Rango but I’m going to settle with Captain America. The match looked well with Rey going for his spots before folding with a heel’s screwjob.

WADE BARRETT, JUSTIN GABRIEL, HEATH SLATER, AND EZEKIEL JACKSON VERSUS THE BIG SHOW, KANE, SANTINO MARELLA, AND KOFI KINGSTON.

Vladimir Koslov was shipped out of the lineup via a kayfabe injury. Kofi replaces him. I expected Big Show’s team to win here because of The Corre’s Wrestlemania rawness but I didn’t think that this match wouldn’t even last three minutes long. Barrett is the current intercontinental champ and Gabriel and Slater are the current tag champs which mean they should at least given them a fighting chance. You bumped off the US Title match and you gave this 8-man tag match less than three minutes so we can hear Hornswoggle rap? BURN IN HELL!

RANDY ORTON VERSUS CM PUNK

This match could have provided more pops but it wasn’t that pretty. It wasn’t that bad either but we weren’t challenged by the booking. Perhaps this is because Randy Orton was selling a leg injury but it barely gave any headway. The match didn’t really give anything new for us to see and frankly, it looked like a Smackdown match more than a PPV match. Hell, even the midair RKO has been laid out a bunch of times. CM Punk played the bad guy well in this match especially when he had evil intensions but that’s about it. I am beginning to wonder if taking out The New Nexus from the equation is a good idea...

JERRY LAWLER VERSUS MICHAEL COLE

This match was overbooked in all areas. It also took more time than it should have gotten in the first place. Was a beer bash worth it compared to a three minute 8-man match? I like the way Jerry “The King” Lawler used Michael Cole’s glass chamber but afterwards Cole had too many moved that were unleashed. Cole in a moment looked credible and if you’re booking him against a 30-year veteran still equipped with mad wrestling skills, this shouldn’t be the case. I like the distraction Jack Swagger and Stone Cold Steve Austin gave the match but after the match it was deplorable. Booker T coming in for a Spin-A-Roonie to an eventual Stone Cold Stunner was just mind-boggling. Then the late GM call was just stupid. And then stunning Josh Mathews after merely reading the GM message was just weird. It looked as if they eliminated the Smackdown announcers so that Lawler and Jim Ross could call the shots for the rest of the event. I hope there is an answer with regards to the incident.

UNDERTAKER VERSUS TRIPLE H
THE STREAK

This match had a main event feel in it. In UFC terms, this was like when the rest of the card had newbies and then there’s the Chuck Liddell versus Randy Couture match. Actually the match was booked like a UFC event and the only thing lacking in the build up was the weigh-in taunting. These two went all out and the fans responded to it. The No Holds Barred stipulation worked here because it destroys the notion that it was just a generic big man match. Undertaker works well in WM scenarios and while his matches with Shawn Michaels were still better, his match with Triple H ranks in the Top 5. The match lasted more than 25 minutes – which was easily the longest match in the card and it was also the most brutal with both superstars taking in nasty bumps. Triple H unloaded three pedigrees. He also managed to execute the Tombstone piledriver where he was mimicking what the Deadman did to Shawn Michaels a year ago (Triple H did the “Stay Down” bid but Undertaker stubbornly declined). Triple H managed to keep his awesomeness by not completely tapping to the Hell’s Gate submission that was locked for over a minute. I don’t know if the ending where Undertaker lied longer and was brought out via stretcher a work or a shoot but it may signal the end of Undertaker’s career at Wrestlemania 28.

JOHN MORRISON, TRISH STRATUS, AND SNOOKI VERSUS DOLPH ZIGGLER, MICHELLE MCCOOL, AND LAYLA

Trish performed well in this match. Michelle McCool at times did too. I can’t say that for the other participants because they weren’t even tagged in the match. All Layla did was to get hit by every offense Michelle mistakenly delivered, all John Morrison did was unleash the Starship Pain to Dolph Ziggler outside the ring, and all Dolph did aside from being the test dummy is break up a pinning attempt. Well, Snooki for some demented and insane reason could have done well inside the ring. Sure she botched the splash but she cartwheeled well. Basically, the cartwheel is a sign of female awesomeness. Again this match could have been done with more time... although not-so-much because of the participants involved.

THE MIZ (C) VERSUS JOHN CENA
WWE CHAMPIONSHIP

I like The Miz retaining because this gives WWE an established star for next year’s Wrestlemania and at the same time, it stops John Cena from getting another title belt. Did you see Miz looking at time nervous when he was jumping alongside Alex Riley? Soak it up Miz because you’re going to be in the main event for a bunch of years. The crowd was dead because The Miz is a heel and John Cena sometimes feels like one. It didn’t help Cena when he came out with gospel singers talking about faith, fortitude, and religious stuffs. The Miz had crisp offense at the start while Cena’s offense looked sloppy at times. After hitting the barricade I thought for sure they’d be too exhausted to continue. When The Rock came out, I wondered how come they became re-energized? But perhaps Rocky was the kicker this match needs. The Rock Bottom sowed the seeds for a Cena versus Rocky match especially since Wrestlemania 28 will happen in Miami. If this was given a better amount of time, then it would be something.

Wrestlemania is held to answer the questions hoisted at the Road of Wrestlemania but it turns out that Wrestlemania 27 merely opened a bigger amount of questions.

Will The Rock and John Cena wait for next year’s Wrestlemania to finish their feud?

When will Christian strike on Edge and what will happen to Alberto del Rio?

Will the Smackdown announcers revolt against the Raw announcers?

Will the anonymous GM be finally revealed?

What will happen to The Corre and The Nexus?

After Wrestlemania, a new chapter always gets revealed.

And this year is no different.

Game over.
