2011 PBA DRAFT: POWERADE TIGERS – WHAT THEY NEED
|Gary David is Mr. Do It All.|
He doesn't like this tag... at all.
(This is the first of ten articles called What They Need. Last year, I made a version where we called out a PBA team’s roster and pick out the slots they need to shore up. Most of these deficiencies are addressed via the draft.)
Anyway, Powerade’s last season was anything but good. Gary David is their only scoring threat and not even a dominating import like Chris Porter can catapult the squad to victory. Midseason acquisitions JR Quinahan and Celino Cruz were not helpful in giving the Tigers an impactful stint.

WHAT THEY NEED:
CENTERS: This is their main problem at the moment – size. The team is stacked with second string slashers, shooters, and quarterbacks and then they have small forwards and centers. This is why I cringed when they lost Asi Taulava to F’N Rob Reyes.
FORWARDS: The retirement of Dennis Espino is nearing while the un-retirement of Kenneth Duremdes is said to be a possibility, the Tigers need a scorer in these positions. At least Sean Anthony looks ready to take his game to the next level.
GUARDS: Like I said, the Tigers are loaded with expendable PG’s. What they need in this draft is to take a marquee PG. Gary David can handle the SG spot but remember when they had Johnny Abarrientos and Alex Cabagnot during their Coke days. An intimidating PG is the most important thing they need to shore up after they solve their size.

WHO SHOULD THEY PICK?
The center position is their biggest issue and Junmar Fajardo could solve that for the Tigers. If they want to solve their firepower problems though Chris Tiu can do both score and orchestrate. JV Casio is basically the same mold as Tiu although Tiu is more of the orchestrator but JV is more of the scorer. When we go to the second round, expect a lot great players still left for the taking. Everyone is forgetting that Magi Sison is a former Smart-Gilas player. If in case he is still available in the second round, people should pick him. Dylan Ababou as well is a good addition if he is still available.
The great thing about the Tigers is that they are assured of two of the top three spots of the 2011 PBA Draft. Unless a team offers them the moon, I don’t think Powerade should trade the picks.
