2011 PBA MOCK DRAFT (FIRST DRAFT)

Hi.

Before you this the players, the order, and the mock draft... I am telling you that most of my selections were researched from various basketball forums in the country. I have no idea who will participate in the draft. I have no idea of the order or the trades that will happen.

All I know is I am bracing each and every day to get hold of those infos to make my mock draft as reliable as ever.

So while I have yet to get those infos, this is the first draft of my mock draft.

Game starts now.

FIRST ROUND

1 POWERADE TIGERS / JUNMAR FAJARDO
I have no idea if Fajardo could be the next Marlou Aquino or Yancy de Ocampo. All I know is that Fajardo is the only center that can be taken first overall. One thing he needs to develop is his skillset. I am not sold on whether or not he can bring his offense to the PBA but not taking a ridiculously tall player with a potential to dominate is kind of stupid as well.

2 RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS / MARCIO LASSITER
Again this is a logical choice. The Painters need to find a do-it-all slasher that they lost when they traded Solomon Mercado. Lassiter is also a deceptively intimidating defender and rebounder. He is an inside-outside force. In some ways we could be looking at a smaller version of Rudy Hatfield.

3 POWERADE TIGERS / JV CASIO
This pick will either be an Archer or an Eagle. Fact is Casio can be the scoring support Gary David has been wanting for several conferences now. All of a sudden, JV will transform Powerade into a contender. Casio can sizzle when the opportunity asks for it and if he can’t score, he’ll find ways to help the team.

4 AIR21 EXPRESS / CHRIS TIU
Tiu has plans to forego participating in this year’s draft which I think is a horrible idea. Tiu has developed into a valuable performer with or without the ball in his hands and I think he’ll also be a great ambassador for brand promotion. This is another pick that could prove wonders for Air21. Unfortunately given that this is... gasp... Air21, we’ll likely see this pick going to Talk N Text.

5 ALASKA ACES / CHRIS LUTZ
I want to say Paul Lee. I really do. However, you can’t not see Lutz and think of him as the second coming of Jeffrey Cariaso. He looks primed up to step out of Smart-Gilas that in some ways is making me think that is holding him back. I have yet to see Lutz explode in his games and I think he will playing for the Aces.

6 SHOPINAS / PAUL LEE
The Cobra Commander is the perfect player to jumpstart the Shopinas franchise. He can score, rebound, pass, and defend or whatever the situation arises. He ditched his last year in UE because he wants to level up in his game and playing top man for this rookie squad will do wonders for his career.

7 PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS / CALVIN ABUEVA
This is not the Petron/SMB team of old. Sure, the team is still dominant... but their bench isn’t as powerful as they were back then. So for Ato Agustin, what he needs is an above average performer that can play multiple positions. Lucky for Agustin, his former player in San Sebastian, fits that billing.

8 BARANGAY GINEBRA KINGS / JASON BALLESTEROS
Last season, the Kings didn’t address their lack of height to bring in three effective members to their squad. With the loss of Rudy Hatfield and the limited appearances of their other bigs, Jason Ballesteros fits the bill. Aside from Fajardo, he is the only other player credible that is standing above 6’7. He also is a bruiser that fits the archetype of Wilmer Ong or Homer Se.

9 AIR21 EXPRESS / MAC BARACAEL
The former FEU King Tamaraw is poised to find his niche in the PBA. The Ronald Tubid play-alike might not be consistent... but he is indeed streaky. He can play the slasher positions well and could do damage if Bong Ramos tries to go small ball on their offense.

10 TALK N TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS / MARK BAROCCA
Consider this scenario: Talk N Text sends this pick alongside Jared Dillinger for Tiu and Air21’s first round pick. While this is a farfetched scenario, I think this would be beneficial for Barocca. It’s hard to see Barocca going to the second round but with the depth of this batch, anything can happen. Besides, he’ll have more minutes with the Express than with the Tropang Texters.

SECOND ROUND

11 AIR21 EXPRESS / DYLAN ABABOU
He was a scorer during his UST days and while used sparingly in Smart-Gilas, he can still provide the offense when necessary. Also, Ababou is versatile and has the capabilities to play all-around. If he is still available at this point, Air21 should claim this former UAAP MVP.

12 POWERADE TIGERS / MAGI SISON
People are forgetting that Magi Sison was once part of the Smart-Gilas squad. Playing his last Gilas tourney in Dubai last March, he might not have the playing time, but he gained a lot under Rajko Toroman.

13 RAIN OR SHINE ELASTO PAINTERS / VIC MANUEL
Despite playing outside the UAAP and the NCAA, Manuel gained fanfare because of his stellar PBL and D-League accomplishments. I expect his no-nonsense playing style to blossom with the Painters especially since Yeng Guiao likes to use these kinds of players.

14 MERALCO BOLTS / ALLEIN MALIKSI
He was barely heralded during his UST days but when he towed the Cebuana Lhuillier Gems to the first D-League Finals, people saw his potential. Besides that, he further sealed his chances of getting drafted by claiming the first D-League MVP award.

15 ALASKA ACES / REIL CERVANTES
Cervantes could have been a first rounder if not for the abundance of talent in this draft. With that said, Alaska will see a bit of pre-PBA Elmer Espiritu in this guy. Hopefully the Aces would put their trust with this rookie.

16 B-MEG LLAMADOS / GARVO LANETE
If I am going to choose between Lanete and Salamat, I am going with the San Beda Lion. He is the squad’s leading dishman and he can also scorer whenever he’s needed. If the minutes are scarce for Lanete, he could use a bit of seasoning in the D-League.

17 PETRON BLAZE BOOSTERS / ERIC SALAMAT
Salamat is an offensive/defensive standout from the powerhouse Ateneo squad. While performing well in clutch games seem to be a weakness, there is a chance that he can boost up Petron’s often-injured backcourt.

18 BARANGAY GINEBRA KINGS / RONALD PASCUAL
Pascual boosted his stock with a respectable stint IN D-League’s NLEX and scored a title with the San Sebastian Stags. I don’t know if he’ll see ton loads of action but he’ll likely do whatever he can to score more minutes.

19 TALK N TEXT TROPANG TEXTERS / DAVE MARCELO
If Marcelo is going to apply for the draft, consider him a project. While he needs further seasoning but he has the tools to succeed. TNT will have Japeth Aguilar but it will never hurt the Texters if they have an extra big man in their bench.

20 SHOPINAS / JAMES MARTINEZ
While Martinez has been sort of forgotten after suffering a career-altering injury, he was once touted as one of the best players in the UAAP. Also, let’s not forget that Larry Fonacier was in the same spot but look at where he is now. If Ken Acibar won’t apply, Martinez is likely the best player left.

So this is the first instalment on what should be an exciting and extremely awesome upcoming draft.

Hopefully I can finalize this as soon as possible.

Game over.
