Smart-Gilas takes on Bahrain for the clincher

Smart-Gilas fought valiantly but they were outclassed by Yi Jianlian and the rest of China. Taking the top spot in Group D, China staved off a late rally from the Philippines, 75 to 60.

Yi shrugged the defense hurled by Kelly Williams and Ranidel De Ocampo and the current NBA star finished with 20 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Wang Zhizhi, a former NBA player in his own right, had 16 points and 5 rebounds and former Laker Sun Yue had 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Meanwhile Marcus Douthit led the Philippines with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks while Chris Tiu is the only other Smart-Gilas player in double figures with 12 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists.

So after Team Pilipinas face China at 8pm (Manila time), the Nationals will face Team Bahrain at around 11am. Because of the 91 to 53 loss UAE dealt to Bahrain and the 92-52 loss Smart-Gilas dealt to UAE, the only way UAE can advance in the semis is by winning against China and with Smart-Gilas losing to Bahrain.

Let’s be reasonable... because that will never happen.

We will check out the action though.

This will mark the first meeting of JV Casio and Bader Malabes. Malabes gained acclaim a couple of days ago when he scored 17 points (15 in the first quarter) against the powerhouse China. In the FIBA-Asia Championship, Malabes has been averaging 13.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steal, 1.0 turnovers, and 30.0 minutes in two games. Casio and Malabes were part of Franz Pumaren’s vaulted La Salle squad that dominated the UAAP in the mid 2000’s. They used to battle Chris Tiu and the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

This time though, Casio has switched allegiances and is now teaming with Tiu to ensure a semis spot.

This should be fun.

Game over!
